Mother's Day 2012

Sunday, May 13

Mother's Day 2012.  Wow.  This year I am a mother to TWO children.  It is such an honor and such a huge responsibility knowing that I am the person that has the biggest effect on their future.  Will they rise up and call me blessed, or will they go to counseling to undo all the mistakes I made/will make?  I am sure it will be some combination of the two!

Each year the "kids" write me a poem for Mother's Day, and this year Sander surprised me by writing it on the mat surrounding a picture we took at Thanksgiving.  Dexter drew each member of our family around the edge and I love it more than words can say!
This year I want to share a few lists with you, but first I have to share the day that I first became a mom.
May 10th, 2009 was Mother's Day and I gave birth to my first baby boy at 2:00pm.  It was the perfect first Mothers' day present!  Thank you for coming into my life and completely turning everything on its head.  You have changed me for the better and I am so thankful for you!
And this is the day after I gave birth to my second baby boy.  He is the baby who has added so much happiness to our family.  We had no idea that we were capable of loving two babies as much as we do, but with your arrival in our life, the love has just grown and grown!

Now for those lists.

Before I had children, here were the things I loved and valued most:
  • Sleep!  Any and all sleep!  Sleeping in was sleeping for 10+ hours and I loved every second of it.
  • Vacations!  I loved travelling with Sander, and we sure did a lot of in our early years of marriage.
  • Leisurely Saturday mornings of brunch, Wait! Wait! Don't Tell me and naps.
  • House projects.  Sander and I loved fixing up our old house together.  He was the mastermind and I was the creative director.
  • Spending time with friends.  Going out last minute for a late dinner was no big deal and we did it all the time.
Now, those were just a few of the things that we did that made me "happy".  When Dexter was still in utero, these came to a sharp halt.  There was no slow detox phase -- I had to give all of them up cold turkey.  Not only did I have to learn to be a mom for the first time, I also had to care for a sensitive baby with severe reflux.  At the time, and even until recently, there was part of me that was still mourning the loss of that list above, especially sleep.

But I am finally coming to the realization that the list of things that I love and value now so far outweighs the first list that I have just been wasting time feeling sad for myself.  I had to share this list for myself just as much as with whoever is reading.  They may seem like small, meaningless things, but these things have brought more joy to my life than all the places I have every travelled or all the money I have ever earned.  I want to remember these tiny moments always.

What I love and value now that I am a mom:
  • The weight of my baby's tired head resting on my shoulder when only I can comfort him
  • The way that your face lit up as you came to chose me as your friend to help pass out muffins at your 3rd Montessori birthday.  This will probably be the last year you choose me over your friends.
  • The way you tell your dad that the baby is probably crying "because mommy isn't there to watch over him".
  • The way my baby plays with my fingers and holds me so tight when I go and nurse him at night.
  • The way your face lights up with joy when I spin you around on the grass and you ask for me to do it again, and again, and again, and again.
  • The way that little errands around town become adventures through your eyes.
  • The way a donut on Saturday morning makes your whole weekend a party
  • The way you remember to pray for people and things I have never brought up
  • The way you love to listen to the Beatles, especially Hey Jude, and the way you make up new lyrics, just like your Daddy does.
  • The way you have humbled me.  There is no way to look like I have it all together when I haven't slept for more than 3 hours in a row for months, or when I have perpetual snot/spit/spit-up stains on my shirt.
  • The way your eyes look straight through appearances.  You don't care what people say, you care what they do, so you constantly remind me to be a person who's actions speak louder than my words.
  • There are days I have no idea what to do!  You bring me to the end of myself quicker than anything else in the world, so I have to look to God as I just can't make it alone.
Dexter and Maxwell, thank you for being challenging, for being dramatic, for being feisty, for being hilarious, and for being sensitive.  You defy the books and make me look to the Lord and pray like I have never prayed before.  I love you from the bottom of my heart.

You have wrecked my life, and I am forever grateful.

Happy Easter, 2012!

Tuesday, April 10

Happy Easter from the Ray family!

Dexter excited about getting eggs and play-doh in his basket.

Ready for the hunt to begin!  He ran around and "slid" into each egg, like he was sliding into home plate.  It was hilarious to say the least.

Merry Christmas, 2011

Friday, December 30

Merry Christmas from our family to yours!

Here is our annual Christmas family picture.  We really wanted to get a picture of Dexter on his rocking horse, but since the Accord was just a tad too small to bring that with us, we brought along his second favorite toy, his hobby horse.  Classic, right?

This year has been a whirlwind of new adventures for us as a family.  Some highlights of the year include:
There have definitely been some struggles as we adjust to having two children to care for and as we deal with some ongoing sensory issues with Dexter, but all in all, we look back at 2011 as a year of new beginnings for our home, our family, our jobs, and our hearts.

Merry Christmas all and may you all have a very joy-filled New Year!

Christmas 2011

Thursday, December 29

Ahoy, Christmas!

The Christmas pictures are uploaded!  Over the next few days I will try and blog some of the highlights of our time with family in DFW.

I have to say it was really incredible seeing this Christmas through Dexter and Maxwell's eyes.  Granted, Maxwell slept through most of the gift exchanges, but having two little ones along this year made it a much sweeter (and hectic!) time for us.  Dexter had a million questions.  Favorite questions:
  • Are these gifts for Jesus?
  • What are we giving to Jesus for his birthday?
  • Are we bringing gifts like the wise men in the Very First Noel?
  • Are we travelling afar?
One of the best things we saw as well was Dexter's excitement to give other's gifts too.  He wanted people to know he brought them a gift as soon as we got where we were going.

He also loved to choose things this trip.  Since we had to run to the doctor's the day we left for DFW (oh yes...that was fun!) for an ear infection, he was on medication the whole time we were gone.  To get him to take it we offered him one candy (ok, we bribed him, but that's life guys).  We offered him a candy from a bag of identical candies and he would look at it and go, "Hmmm...which one do YOU want Mommy?"  And would wait till I chose one.  Then he would pick one after much thought.  It was so cute.  I have no idea what criteria he used to decide which candy was the winner, but he sure put lots of thought into it!
Trains!

Toddler Caroling

Wednesday, December 21

Dexter chose the electric guitar as his instrument to go caroling with and did a pretty impressive job rocking out at each door. Who taught him that?

Chocolate and Peppermint Candy Cane Cake Balls

Thursday, December 15

Click here for the delicious recipe from Crave.Indulge.Satisfy blog!

I had these at a party over a month ago and I couldn't get them out of my head.  I thought about them on almost a daily basis and have been waiting for an event I could justify making 50 cake balls for.  Ha.  Not something I needed hanging out around the house, right?

So, today was the MOPS Christmas party and it was our table's turn to bring food.  I am beyond exhausted this week and have nixed all the other fun craft and baking ideas I had (cinnamon rolls for the neighbors, sewing the felted sweater stockings, etc) due to lack of sleep.  But these cake balls had to be made.

Slight adjustments I made:
  • I used Dr. Oetker's Chocolate Cake Mix because it has a deep chocolate flavor but isn't super moist.  Cake balls can go mushy really fast if you aren't careful.
  • I was careful to not add too much icing -- just enough to make sure the cake balls held their shape.
  • I added a few crushed peppermints to the cake mix for extra peppermint flavor
  • I also added about 2 tsp of peppermint extract to the icing
  • I bought the pre-crushed peppermints...I've never seen these before and they were worth all $2.50 I paid!
I'm making more this weekend for the neighbors.  Mmmmm.  Enjoy!

Decorating the Tree

Wednesday, December 7

Our little drummer boy
The tree is really, really simple this year.  As we unpacked ornaments, I just rewrapped the glass ornaments and put them right back in the box.  The tree is almost all at Dexter's height and he can climb on the window seat to reach the top.  He LOVES the lights though.  He sits there and counts them and tells us the colors.

Gun Metal Hoops, My Favorite Thing...Under $30

Wednesday, November 30

I'm linking up tonight with a super fun blog party ... a favorite things party!  The idea is to host a party, and instead of doing a white elephant gift and being sad your gift wasn't the "hot item" of the party, you bring a reasonably priced favorite thing for everyone at the party!  Then you introduce your item as you pass it around explaining why it is your favorite item.

Ummmm, yes!  I love this idea!  I could invite all my curly haired friends over and we could do a favorite curly hair product...how fun would that be?  I would pass around
It's under $5 and is fabulous!!...although I did love it better before the reformulated it...

But, if I was having a normal party, I would have to pass around
Gun Metal Hoops made in Ethiopia!  This piece is handmade in Ethiopia using recycled nickel, copper, and bronze melted down from previous war weapons. Most of the artisans who created the pieces are HIV positive and receive health care and literacy training in addition to job training.  I would love telling these women's story as I passed out these beautiful earrings!  It is the total story of taking something that is ugly and destructive (war weapons) and turning it into beautiful and job-creating jewelry!

So, who is up for a "Favorite Things" party??

Pumpkin Patch 2011

Friday, October 14

It's that time of year again! Yes, it was in the 80's and my sweater got a tad warm by the end of our time at the patch, but it was worth it!

What is this?!  A picture of me AND the kids...and we're all fully dressed and showered?  Oh, this was a special day.
Dexter likes to rub Maxwell's head.  At least it isn't his belly...

Me and my sweet Maxwell baby.  He's 3 months old today!

Our fabulous neighbor Jane, the one who went with us to the patch last year (click here to see last year's pictures), came again this year.  She's the reason you see me in the pictures. :)

Stars and Stripes Banner and Flag Cake

Friday, July 1

AGHHH!  How cute is this??

Here is the tutorial from Rebekah at A Bit of Sunshine.  I don't have the time to make it this year...for obvious reasons, but I am making this for next year for sure.  I love that she shows what brand of paint chips she uses and what size font she used...she took the guesswork out!

I am also planning on making this cake from Glorious Treats...next year...:
Could be really fun to do with kids and a great option for those "bake-off" contests.  I think the wow factor when you cut into the cake would be awesome.  You could use a from-scratch cake recipe that makes 3 8" layer cakes and change the recipe for that...just an idea.
