Halloween meets Diwali

Monday, October 26

First we met up with our friends Gopi and Akil to carve pumpkins. Since this is their first Halloween in the US, they wanted to know what it was all about.

Our "pumpkins"

Then they took us to a Diwali celebration. It is the biggest festival in the Hindi religion where they celebrate the triumph of good over evil. It is the festival of lights - as the light signifies the triumph. There was music, dancing, amazing food, and so much more. Dexter got a little tired towards the end - but thankfully the Moby worked, even with the LOUD music. Yea MOBY!

Deep Thought Monday

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”
-Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird

On this rainy Monday I’ve become a little introspective. I began to think about this famous quote from To Kill a Mockingbird. For those of you who don’t know the story, the whole plot revolves around the assumptions a set of children make about a strange man down the street and the not so great results of those assumptions. The story ends with the main character, Scout, affirming that her dad was right – you really don’t know a person till you walk around in their shoes.

How many people actually think like Atticus? I mean, its one thing to agree that “yes, I should always consider what it is like for another,” but it is a totally different thing to actively apply it to our everyday life.

Then again, if you do apply it all the time, which is supposed to be the right and best thing to do, how do you keep from being burned out? That person who is so difficult to get along with, well, if I just thought about their life and what effects them, well, geeze, I shouldn’t avoid them, maybe I should take some time and write them a nice note, maybe bring them a meal. That sentence was long and exhausting, how much more so is living like that on a daily basis.

Ok. But God says to live sacrificially.

So, you can see my mind has been running around in circles.

Maybe we can meet in the middle. You there, you who assume that the smiley person is always happy and has an easier life then you, stop and try to think what it is like to walk around in their skin. Think about what makes them tick. And you over there busy with your emails and your phone calls, slow down and ask yourself if you think you are really the only one who can reach out to the hurting person who you see with all their needs.

In the end, To Kill a Mockingbird isn’t a story about kids who thought the man down the street was a ghost-like monster. It wasn’t even really about a man who may or may not have had a learning disorder or a traumatic childhood. It is about the everyday people in our lives who we make assumptions about, good or bad, and the effect those assumptions have on others.
s
I don’t know what the end result of this blog is, but be thinking about the Boo Radleys in your life and your reaction to them.

Oh, and if you haven't read this book since 9th grade, pick it up again and be suprised by what you find. You can borrow my copy if you want...

Taking down the hill

Thursday, October 8

You can't really tell from this picture, but the hill in our backyard was at least 4-5' higher than the foundation of our house.  It had a huge stump in it and it came all the way up to our back door, making a patio or proper drainage impossible.

Notice the tree on the right...it leans just a tad

Oh...sorry.  I couldn't see your house behind those ridiculously tall gardenia bushes.  They haven't been moved, yet.  But if the weather is nice, they will be gone Saturday.

The oak that was about 5 feet from our back door.  Down.

The hill and stump are gone!

Have you ever seen a more beautiful site?  Wait till Saturday when the grass goes in.  I'm giddy.

Flax seed

Tuesday, October 6

Flax seed. Mmmmm. It is delicious and nutritious.

My friend Pauline recommended buying a coffee grinder and grinding my own flax seed. Flax is full of amazing benefits such as, Omega-3 essential fatty acids, Lignans (which have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities), and fiber. Web-MD has a page on flax seed if you want to check it out. A thought I had on my own is that flax is the fiber that linen comes from, and linen is the fabric God chose for his priests to wear in the holy of holys. Maybe he knew a little something about how special this plant is.

I love it on Blue Bell Nutty Chocolate ice cream. Because ice cream is so good for you...

Fall Friday

Friday, October 2

I just finished my bowl of Raisin Bran, changed Dexter's diaper, and opened all the windows. The birds are singing outside and we just saw our neighbor come out and get her paper. Just another quiet day in the neighborhood. Ahhh.

Fall is my spring. As these first cool fronts come through, I begin to imagine what life will be like without the ever present oppressive heat. Walks to the park with Dexter, picnics with Sander, getting in the car without having to first turn on the air conditioner. Oh the bliss. Today is my official first day of fall. I don't care what the calendar says. I am going to throw open the windows, clean the blinds, and make apple donuts.
