Jehovah Jireh

Wednesday, September 21

We saw this BMW on our way back from DFW a few weekends ago. The license plate says "J JIREH" I assume this stands for Jehovah Jirah, which means the Lord will provide.

Guess this time he provided a BMW...

Obedience

Tuesday, September 20

Dexter loves his child's Bible. He gets it out every day and flips through it like he is really reading it until he finds his favorite stories. Today he landed on Deborah. A very random spot for him to be so interested in it. He wanted me to read it several times. Now, this version of the children's Bible is a little spotty with details. The book basically says, Deborah went out with the army of Israel, told them to fight because God was with them, and they won. Dexter wanted more, so I added in why. As I began to explain it to him, with an emphasis on obedience as that is something Dexter doesn't quite grasp (hey, who does?), it began to teach a few things to my own heart as well.

I explained that the army listened to Deborah because she heard from God and they respected her. The army didn't want to fight as they thought they would loose because the other army was SO big. But, because they were obedient, they won. I explained that mommy doesn't always want to do certain things, but when God tells her to, she obeys. Not because I want to, but because I love God and I know He loves me and wants to help me. Just like I love Dexter and want to help him.

It really made me think. I realized how hard it must be for Dexter to obey me day after day when he wants to do things and can't understand why I say no. I know I am saying no because it is unsafe or could lead to something unsafe in the future, but he can't understand that. Really, the only reason he obeys me is because he knows there is a consequence if he doesn't or, and hopefully this is the case as he gets bigger, because he trusts me. Wow. Do I happily obey God because I trust Him, or do sometimes I just fear a consequence?

With the launch of my new business and ministry coming at the end of this week, I have felt a little nervous as I begin to invest time, money, and my reputation on this enterprise.  However, there are so many "coincedences" that led to this venture that I know it is something I must do, wheteher I "win" or not.  I know it was a move of obedience.

So, like the army when it listened to Deborah, I want to obey, even when it looks like I may loose. The battle belongs to the Lord right?

Supermom!

Monday, September 19

I feel like a supermom tonight!  I cooked, played with Dexter (while nursing) while fielding emails and to-do items for my Noonday launch at the end of this week.

Maxwell had his 2 month shots, well the 2 I am ok with him getting this month, and he was so fussy and sad this afternoon.  Poor guy just doesn't feel good.  I got the flu shot...hope I feel ok into tomorrow!

The result!

Now superdad is taking care of the aftermath...the perfect ending to a busy day!

That Cupcake Diaper?

Sunday, September 18

Now that Dexter is talking so much more, he is starting to make hilarious observations and ask fun questions. The other day we ate some mini cupcakes and discarded the wrapper on a plate. He looked down at the wrapper, seemed deep in thought, then looked at me seriously and asked, "that cupcake diaper?"

Sounds logical to me!

What Changes?

Thursday, September 8

I have actually gotten several phone calls after my last post on Radical wondering what in the world I meant.  I guess that is what I get for being elusive!

The book above should add another clue.  I read this last year as part of a book club and it opened my eyes to so many aspects of poverty and women's issues around the globe.  The subtitle sums up the books goal and focus: "Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide".  Last week I came across a business that is trying to do just that, but with a certain twist that seems just perfect for my skills and passions.

Through this opportunity I will be able to be an ambassador for those around the world oppressed by poverty and society.  I'll be doing this by selling jewelry, accessories, and home items made by artisans from areas such as Uganda, Guatemala, and Tibet.  They are all Fair Trade certified, and many have a personal relationship with the business I'll represent.

But honestly, the stuff is just gorgeous...very Anthropologie in style.  I would wear each and every item (hey, I already had a pair of the Ugandan shoes that they sell sell!).  That's what really attracted me to this company, the fact that their items were on trend and fabulous in addition to being Fair Trade and partnered with ministries and organizations seeking to provide pathways out of poverty.

Here is one of my favorite stories behind the artisans from Ethiopia:

Raven + Lily is a non-profit studio dedicated to empowering marginalized women through design partnerships ad micro-enterprise opportunities. They support women's empowerment programs that comply with fair trade standards and provide design focused micro-enterprise training. In addition, proceeds from each product are returned to assist with community development.

Their Ethiopia collection is made in partnership with Beza International which is dedicated to empowering Entoto Mountain artisans. Many of these women are forced into prostitution and early marriages. Many become pregnant or contract HIV, and are ostracized by their families and society with no where to go. Their families send them to the Entoto Mountains to seek recovery by bathing in the "magical waters". When they are unhealed, their families abandon them and they are left to fend for themselves. Beza International has trained these women and given them a skill to support themselves and their children. Not only are these women learning a skill, they are learning that their lives matter (regardless of their health status). Learning these skills helps them feel valued, which restores their dignity and self-worth. Knowing that other women around the world are wearing their creations is the most empowering gift we can offer them.

Most of this collection is made from recycled nickel, copper, and bronze, including previous war conflict weapons – that's what we call upcycling! Genuine silver embellishments are made by a local silversmith. Each of these spectacular beads is a unique piece of art.

I love that each and every piece has a story like this.  Now, when someone notices jewelry that I am wearing, I can share a bit of the artisans story (advocating for them and their enterprise) and not just say what a great deal I got on them (there is that though too!).  And, as someone who always like to give gifts with meaning, each item comes with the story behind the artisans who made it.  Not only is it a gift for a friend, you can let them know the gift is also supporting artisans who so desperately need a fair paying job.

I will share more soon, especially once my website launches.  Thanks for bearing with me as I share this story piece by piece.

There are many other exciting "coincidences" that have led me to this risky place.  I'm jumping in with many things on the line.  On the one hand I am so nervous, thinking about what all I could loose, but when I go back and read the stories of the artisans I'll be representing, I know I have to at least try.

Radical: Changes are Coming

Tuesday, September 6

Have you read this book yet?  I am and it is changing my attitude in a big way!  I wouldn't say I am learning anything that is radically new, but it is certainly making me understand and want to apply what I have already known in a much bigger way.  This book won't leave you content to just sit back and relax...you want to get up and do something!

Some changes are on the horizon for us and the timing is just incredible.  I can't wait to share the story with you soon...I am just so excited.

But, with the changes comes some risk.  I have to say I am so excited but also a little (ok, a lot) nervous.

I'll share soon!

Undie Hat: Potty Training, Ray Style

Thursday, September 1

Yes, that's what we call an Undie Hat
Potty training is underway at our house.  Ok, so it's been going on since January.  Yep, just nine short months to get us to the underwear-while-at-home-but-not-out-in-public-yet stage.  Let me explain.  Starting in January, I would move Dexter to the Baby Bjorn potty seat for number 2.  He would just get that look in his eyes, and off he would go flying through the air in my arms, to the potty seat.  Soon after, he insisted on going on the potty every time for number 2 and would run there himself -- he seemed to hate the feeling of it in his diaper.  If we were at a friend's house or the park he would freak out and look around, lost, looking for the "teddy bear potty" (the Baby Bjorn...).  This seemed great, until it took him 20 minutes from the time he ran to the potty till we were done.  Lots of books were read and we were late to lots of morning walks with our neighbor.  I began to think, why did I start this!?

Right as we began the move, Dexter regressed in a big way.  Instead of using the potty, he would yell "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" and run the opposite way.  I actually had to change a few poopy diapers and I was not happy.

Thankfully, as soon as we were settled in the new house, he was back on the wagon...I mean potty...but just for number 2.  I wasn't pushing anything at this point.  I was almost to my due date and was not interested in starting anything radical.  In fact, I wasn't even thrilled about helping him out of his pull-up and sitting down to read to him.  This involved bending and sitting close to the floor...not something a very pregnant woman wants to do!
Then, 3 weeks after Maxwell was born, Dexter found his Cars and Thomas the Tank Engine themed underwear in his room (bought back in the early Spring when I had higher hopes and more energy).  He insisted on wearing it.

My first thought was: "ugh! I can barely walk like a normal person and am only getting 2 hours of sleep at a time...you want to potty train now!?"  But, my fear that if we didn't try when Dexter wanted to try we may have to wait another year before he was ready again, won out.  So on went the undies.

We're progressing, with BIG help from the M&M cookies from HEB.  He loves seeing what color M&M the cookie will have after each successful attempt.  I told him yesterday that we wouldn't have cookies soon...so get ready.

Maybe in another 9 months he will be ready to go out of the house without a pull-up?

At least for now he is super happy and proud of himself!

*Disclaimer:  Dexter is a very strong willed and, ahem, vibrant child.  There was a time where I had to leave every play date early because of a biting, pushing, or hitting incident.  However, I am seeing a slight glimmer of hope to this stronger personality.  For, when directed the right way (potty training for example), his strong willed-ness and his distaste for anything yucky to be on him is lending itself to a quicker potty training time.  Since I can't control the personalities of my children, it's better to just go with it, right?

Chore Time

Dexter has started to be a big help around the house...as long as he is supervised that is. A 2 year old boy with access to a stool is a dangerous thing on its own!

Did you notice that Lightning McQueen and his friends were "watching" the whole time?  Dexter carries them around and sets them up to "watch" whatever he is doing.

My Dear Friend

Sunday, August 28

My dear friend, Pauline Tate, passed away yesterday.  The picture above was taken when Maxwell was just four days old.  It was such a joy to introduce Pauline to Maxwell and have her bless him so soon after he was born.

Pauline and I had a saying about our friendship, we said that we were "sisters separated by age."  And we were!  First, we are sisters in the Lord, but secondly, we have a unique connection to each other.  She is someone that I would just have a feeling about, or a dream about, and would call and it would be right when something was happening.  We understood each other without words and could often complete each other's sentences.  This is not a relationship I ever expected to have with someone 56 years my senior, but it was a true blessing.

I first met Pauline early in 2008.  She came to talk to our class at church about having a thriving devotional life.  Before class started we had an ice breaker game to get to know people better.  We were supposed to group up by birthday month and share something about ourselves.  Pauline and I couldn't find anyone with our birth month, so we ended up together.  We instantly connected and I began going to the prayer meeting she had at her house every Tuesday afternoon.  Often times I was the only one who showed up, and those were the best times by far.  Our friendship grew, I learned how to pray all over again, and I was able to soak up all the wisdom this amazing woman had learned from her long and very eventful life.

One of the last times I spoke to Pauline and asked how she was doing, she replied very happily that she was "going home!".  Then, the last thing she said to me was "I'll see you up there!"  She was in great spirits and was looking forward to meeting the One she has spoken with so many times in prayer in person soon.  I am so happy she is now seeing face to face the Lord Jesus.  Yes, I miss my dear friend deeply and can't imagine life without her, but ultimately I am so happy that she is finally home.

There are so many things I have learned from Pauline and I think the best way I can honor her memory is by typing them up and passing them along to others.  This is one of the things she was known for at church -- she always had a handout about something or other!  So, over this next week I will be typing up everything I have gathered these past years and will share it here on the blog.

I love you so much, dear friend!

Why I Gave Birth Naturally

Thursday, August 25

I have really enjoyed other mom's birth stories, but never got around to writing out my experience with Dexter.  I was probably distracted by reflux and all the new challenges a first time mom faces.  But, this time around, I want to share Maxwell's birth story.  For both Dexter and Maxwell I gave birth with midwives without any interventions.  This really effected how the births progressed and my experience (obviously!), so I thought I would let you know how I got to this place.

I didn't just wake up and think, "today I want to feel as much pain as possible when I give birth".  In fact, it was really a gradual process that led me to the midwives and then to embracing an intervention-free (well, as much as possible) labor.

I had my regular appointment with my OB/GYN before I got pregnant with Dexter and began to feel uneasy with his office and bedside manner.  He moved to a new office building and the exam rooms we filled with posters of elective, cosmetic procedures.  Hmmm.  This is not the time I want to feel bad about my appearance.  Then, as I began to ask him questions about areas of concern, he brushed me aside totally telling me I couldn't believe everything the internet said.  Totally agreed, that's why I was there asking him to clarify.  Instead of answering, he just tried to make me feel uninformed and unintelligent.  His manner was so off-putting, I knew I never wanted to deliver a baby with him and began my search for a new OB.

I began to ask around, but most women I knew hadn't had babies yet or had pretty bad birth experiences.  I found it difficult as you had to basically choose a doctor based on someone elses recommendation.  By the time you saw the doctor yourself, you weren't really in a place to try them and then move on if you didn't like them.  You either were pregnant and needed consistent care, or you only went in once a year.

This is when I began to think I wanted to find an OB who was at least open to the idea of a natural birth.  I was by no means sold that I wanted to give birth that way, but I figured if I found someone open to it they would be slower to perform some of the harsher interventions my friends experienced.  At the time my friends had experienced rushed inducements that led to fetal distress and emergency c-sections, fourth degree episiotomies (yes...I said FOURTH) because the doctor on call wanted to go home for Thanksgiving lunch, and other unpleasant birth experiences.

All of this led me to fear interventions more than the pain of labor.  I figured labor has a set beginning and end, but the harm from interventions that go wrong could be much more far reaching.

So, here I was calling OBs and speaking to their nurses.  When I asked if they supported natural birth the nurses all said "no".  I thought this was telling.  I could go in and the doctor may say yes to me, figuring I'd change my mind, but the nurses know if anyone actually ends up giving birth that way.  I called the one OB I found online who had great reviews and the nurses said yes, she supported natural birth, but no, she wasn't taking new patients.  What to do...well, they recommended the midwives who worked in the same office as this OB.

Midwives?  That freaked me out.  I didn't know anything about them.  I was at the end of the line though, so decided to check them out for that year's exam.  This time the exam room wasn't papered with cosmetic procedures, but instead pictures of moms and new babies and thank you notes to the midwives raving about how wonderful their birth experience was.  I saw Theodora and she spent an HOUR with me telling me about their philosophy of care, what to expect, and answering all of my questions with respect.  It was just what I wanted, I felt loved, safe, and respected in mind and body.

So, now I began to research what this natural labor was all about.  I watched the Business of Being Born on netflix a few times and the best thing about that movie was I realized there was more to natural birth than just pain and horror.  Now, I am not the bravest of people when it comes to pain (ask any of my family members how much I complain about paper cuts or other minor pain), but the more I learned through books, classes, and other women, I began to think I might actually be able to do this.

We hit a snag with pre-term labor at 24 weeks (my body didn't do what I had hoped it would), but that was when the beauty of this midwife practice really kicked in.  I was under the more conservative care of the midwives, but was admitted to Texas Childrens/St. Lukes and had all the wonderful care there when my body stepped out of what was "normal".  Thankfully all went well and I was able to give birth with both Dexter and Maxwell without interventions. I wanted to give birth with women I trusted 100%, in a calm atmosphere, with the support of OBs and others should I need them.

I know and fully believe that there are real and good reasons to be induced, to have a c-section, or other interventions...but for me the fear of having these forced on me when they weren't really needed was more frightening than the temporary pain of labor.  This isn't the case for all women.  The way we give birth is often out of our control and one particular way of giving birth doesn't make you a "better" mom in any shape or form!  This was the way I chose, due to several small steps along the way, but it isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Through giving birth naturally I have learned so much about myself and it has even effected other areas of my life.  But, more on that after I share my birth story...

My Secret Weapon

Monday, August 22

We have been blessed with a lot of books and toys these past few months:  Dexter's birthday, relatives in town, Maxwell's birth and "big brother" gifts. Dexter and I have both loved then new additions -- he is entertained and I am very happy he is entertained!

But...all those new additions pile up and the old, now boring toys get thrown around the room, literally. So, I did a little organizing using a tip I learned from the family I babysat for in Aberdeen. She would box up sets of toys and put them away in the closet once the new had worn off and the kids weren't really playing with them. I used to do this about once a month, but with the move and the end of pregnancy (hey, I was happy if I could just kick the loose toys toward a basket at the end of the day those last few weeks!), it just didn't happen.

Making sure the bookshelf if cleaned out and has just the books we are reading/like right now means we read a lot more. When the books are a mess and Dexter can't find the books he wants, he just gives up and asks to watch DVDs. We always read so much more right after I organize the books.

Here is my secret weapon -- the toy closet! Some of these are toys he has grown out of and are waiting for Maxwell, but most are just ones that don't currently interest him.  What is great about this closet, is after a month or so packed away, it seems like a brand new toy when you bring it back out.  Perfect for that end of afternoon fuss fest.  Also, when you go through the toys to pack them away it gives you a chance to put the sets back together, find that missing puzzle piece, and to throw away those old chick-fil-a toys.

So, with the toys organizing and week two of being on my own,  I decided it was also time to clean out my attitude.  Yes, I can lay on the couch all morning with a DVD on, but the reality is I am not really rested and Dexter isn't really entertained.  So, I peeled myself from the couch, brought out the speakers for the computer, and got the music going.  We have danced, jumped on the bed, played with cars, built a castle out of blocks (and knocked it down a million times), pretend drove to Chick-fil-a, and I have even done a few loads of laundry.  My house is still a disaster (don't even look at the kitchen floor!) and I look like I've been run over by a truck, but we are trying to have more fun today.

I read over the weekend that mom's attitude becomes everyone else's attitude.  Ugh.  I hate to admit that is true because it means I need to change...but it is.  So, I may not be able to see straight and I this may not be the best writing ever, but I am up, trying to have fun, and looking to set a new mood for the house!

On My Own

Tuesday, August 16

This week has been my first week with two children on my own. I am so tired already due to getting up multiple times in the night and then not really getting a nap because of dissimilar schedules. Hmmm...I'm sure it will be ok soon.

Maxwell seems to have a characteristic manner too, just like Dexter. Dexter crossed his ankles since he was a baby (still does!). Here's Maxwell's:

Ray Rescue Crew

Saturday, August 13

Sander's brother and mom arrived Sunday to help out with Maxwell and to play with Dexter. Skyler and Dexter had a great time. Dexter would try as hard as he could to push Skyler over and would "pump his legs" to help get enough oomph...this meant he lifted his back leg and shook it. He also learned to say "wrecking crew!", with the hand sign, and would run as fast as he could to knock Skyler over.

Maxwell isn't quite ready to join the big boys yet...but soon!

First Bath

Thursday, August 11

Maxwell had his first bath yesterday.  He actually seemed very pleased and contented...at first.  Dexter was happy to have his brother join him...at first.

Does it look like Dexter is taking aim with that bucket, because he is.  2 seconds later, the bucket of water was thrown on Maxwell's face and this sweet, happy scene came to a quick end.  Oh well. It was sweet while it lasted.

Family Pool Fun

Wednesday, August 10

Last week we had a "cool" evening when the breeze was fairly strong, so we decided to head out to the pool. Maxwell came and he and I sat on the side and read while Sander and Dexter swam. I loved it as I got to get out of the house -- finally!

We ate watermelon...

And Maxwell slept the whole time...priceless!

Reality

Saturday, August 6

This picture is slightly staged...but only slightly!  I have been reading a blog series entitled "a day in the life".  It is a series of posts by bloggers showing what their day to day life really consists of.  Now, I don't think my blog sugar coats things (not even the satan sandwiches!) or has the facade created by splendid photos and tutorials that the real blogs have, but I thought this was a great picture to show what life was like, at least this week.

That's Dexter trying to use his potty.  Right next to the table.  He brought it over to me, absolutely insisting that mommy help him.  Then, he decided to grab my skirt and pull on it as I tried to get Maxwell's medicine ready.  Oh boy...

I know I will look back and just remember the sweet times; the kisses goodbye, the spontaneous running around in circles, the complete joy in being given a chocolate chip cookie and the sweet "thank you, mommy" that resulted...un-prompted, mind you.

But some days need a little sugar coating...

Lord Peter Wimsey to the Rescue

Tuesday, August 2

Lord Peter Wimsey, you are keeping me sane.

Somehow I never read Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey mystery books before this year.  I picked up Have His Carcase at my parent's house over the holidays and was hooked.  About this same time, a friend of mine who is getting her master's in English Literature, named her son Elliott Sayer.  I asked if it was after Dorothy Sayers, and it was!  She has all the books and suggested I borrow them to read in order after I had my baby.  She said it helped stave off postpartum depression for her...and so far it is for me as well.  They are the perfect combination of Hurcule Poirot and Jeeves and Wooster (which I have always loved!).  They keep my mind engaged and challenge me mentally, but also have that British wit that keeps things from getting too serious.

I am actually glad to be awake some nights nursing so I can read a few more pages.

Relief Team A and Paternity Leave

Monday, August 1

Relief Team A (A for Andrews!) was made up of my mom and some help by my older and younger sisters.  My mom arrived the day I gave birth, and only just left Saturday (with a brief time back in Fort Worth with Dexter).  Thankfully she was here through the roughest part of recovery...you know moms, the part no one tells you about when you are pregnant the first time. = ) Thankfully I am recovering much better than I did with Dexter, probably due in large part to the awesome help I've had and that I know better than to push myself this time.

Dexter of course loved having Mimi here and has been asking for her, saying, "I miss Mimi" since she left. Thankfully we have Relief Team R (R for Ray!) coming Sunday! Tootsie, aka Sander's mom Tonya, will be here for a week and we are looking forward to her help a lot.

This week, Sander is taking his paternity leave and hanging out with us. Dexter and Sander went out to the Guild Shop and picked up the side table we bought Saturday and then went to Ikea to pick up the long-awaited Expedit bookshelf for the play area in the den.

Seriously, how cute are these pictures of them putting the shelf together? Dexter is giving a running commentary on every step they take and Sander is letting Dexter help a lot.  Have to say that I'm lucky I saw this guy coming when I was only 19...
