Sander and I just ordered the Naturepedic Organic Cotton Mattress! I have been doing a lot of research on what organic items are worth it to buy, and which ones are just a way to spend extra money. After looking into it I realized we really wanted an organic mattress, or at least one without vinyl (PVC) and phthalates. Since the baby will spend at least half his day sleeping on this mattress, that seems like a good place to start cutting down on his harmful chemical exposure. I have been looking into this for awhile but just found out that the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission actually banned the use of some Phthalates found in crib mattresses and baby bedding as of Feb 10, 2009.

There are lots of mattresses on the market now that advertise organic liners, fillers, etc, but we decided on the Naturepedic. Here is a great info page if you want to know more: http://www.naturepedic.com/facts/

Amazon has it available with free shipping so it really isn't that much more than a regular crib mattress. You can see it here on our: Amazon Baby Registry.
